This is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do. Creating a law system for a species of werewolves with a full hierarchy and precedents in place. Why get that complex? Because it’s important and will apply to my novel later on. Most of us will admit that we dislike politicians but have you really tried writing laws before? I mean ones that will create the basis of an entire world and creating histories that lead to them being put into place. I have been trying for years and I’m still finding gaping holes that will put nothing into place. Being a writer I want to fill all those holes but I’ve come to realize a few things.
- There are going to be holes, and there will be no way for you to fill all of them even if you tried.
- More often than not, you can’t fill every gap in every law. Naturally laws aren’t iron clad and will be vague. Wording of a law can be it’s biggest gap.
- There should be ones that will contradict previous ones (When a law needs to be replaced, you write an amendment. Don’t just delete the previous law.)
- Those contradictions should have explanations.
- The Devil is in the details. (Loopholes can be good plot points for later!)
When it comes to your law system it will be different. No you don’t have to use the legal jargon unless that is what works for you. But if you are like me and want to go with a simpler approach go for it! You can have it written as more of a set of rules for your world to preside by, laws of physics and magic included.
All of this would be put into your fact-book for later, including the mini-stories (precedents) behind the laws. Keep in mind something when you are working on this.
Your law system will be a reflection of the culture and morality of the world your character is living in.
People often don’t realize that when a law is put into place it is affecting something occurring in the world at that time, and will therefore be a reflection of events, social standards, and morals of the time. Just look back on our own constitution and you will see how the amendments have changed or contradict because of changes in morality over the course of history. Take a look at the laws in your town or state and note how they have developed over the history of your town or state. [Side Note: It’s always a good thing to look over the laws in your area once in a while. We all have a responsibility to know our rights and where the line is with the law.]
Now, I’m still not getting anywhere with this system yet. But when I do, I will get back to this post and update it with what I’ve figured out works for me!
So if you have figured something out please let us know in the comments! I would love to hear from you on this topic.
